Our Mission
Connecting People and Ideas to Create a World That Works For All—so what does that mean?
What people?
These are people seeking change in their lives, organizations, and communities. Whether they know it or not, these people are the smart, creative, compassionate leaders of the future!
What ideas?
These are ideas that help us see the world in a new way and redefine what is possible—ideas that provide not only inspiration and vision to give us the WHY but also tools that give us the HOW.
What is a world that works for all?
In essence, it is a world where we balance the needs of the person with the needs of the whole.
Our vision is emergent and continually evolving. We see the world as a place where our actions as individuals, organizations, communities, and countries embody stewardship, sustainability, quality, partnership, inclusion, and other values that support the well-being of us all. Ultimately, this world must come from all of us, working together.
We know we have a long way to go, but all of us can help the world get there, one day—and one book—at a time.
Edward Elgar Publishing
Edward Elgar Publishing is a leading independent academic and professional publisher with a strong focus on the social sciences and legal fields. We publish 400 book and journal titles annually and have successfully created a prestigious list of over 7,000 titles.
Our Vision: to be the pre-eminent independent academic and professional publisher in law, business and the social sciences
Our Mission: to enrich and support our academic and professional communities through creative commissioning and effective dissemination of high calibre content for a global audience, and by delivering a dynamic, responsive and efficient publishing service to authors, readers and customers.
Our Values: proudly independent; thoughtful publishing; putting authors first; a collaborative, long term approach to business; responsive, efficient and friendly; quality production processes and standards; a globally oriented approach
The company was founded by our current Chairman, Edward Elgar, and remains an independent family business. Edward's original mission was to create a publishing house that attracted high quality books by offering a superior service to authors and we remain focused on treating potential authors and their books with care and attention to detail. We believe it is difficult for large corporate publishers who often suffer from very high levels of staff turnover, top down management and offshored production processes to replicate the dynamic, responsive and efficient publishing service we can provide.
Edward Elgar Publishing was conceived as an international scholarly press and from the beginning our sales were derived equally from Europe, North America and Asia Pacific regions, reflecting our author base and focus on topics of global interest. Today the Middle East, Latin America and a number of African countries are also important markets.
Our offices are located in the UK (in the Regency town of Cheltenham and Camberley near London) and the US (in Northampton, Massachusetts). Our editors and sales team make frequent visits to universities and conferences throughout the globe, meeting with some 20,000 scholars each year to learn about their plans and identify academic trends and ideas for new titles that would be of benefit to our readers.
Elgar titles are, on average, some of the most highly cited books in their respective subject fields. Gaining more chapter and book level citations than our large commercial competitors and some well know university press publishers. Validating our thoughtful approach to publishing, marketing and dissemination.
Recently the company has received a number of awards and distinctions for our digital publishing and global reach, as well as for our traditional approach to publishing.*
